feather extensions...

For a while I had debated the possibility on getting a coloured extension, just to have a little fun with my hair. So all while flipping through magazines the last couple months, I started spotting celebrities sporting feathers clipped into their hair, I was intrigued. So last month I messaged my aunt, also my hairstylist, and asked her if they were carrying any of these feather extensions. As it so happens she had been looking into carrying them along side their coloured extensions. A couple of weeks I got the call that they were in, and yesterday I was excited to finally go to Reflections Day Spa and check them out! Upon her advice, I went with three, and decided to add some colour variety...

Before
The Process

After

I was quite happy with the end result!

They actually ended up being fairly subtle under my top layers after styling my hair myself this morning, so I'm going to go in next week and have them moved closer to the top layers of my hair.

The feathers are actually rooster feathers died various colours- and they can be washed, dried, straightened, or curled just like your natural hair!

july's inspiration board...

Saturday afternoon, after a day of many errands, B kindly went to work and mounted both my new white board and my bulleton board (aka. inspiration board) above my desk. Now I have a functioning work station complete with space to write down my ideas as well as a spot to host visuals for things I need and want to remember. After all, in the run of the day, how many thoughts and ideas going through your mind, how I am to remember who are the people I need to return calls to, or what my sources were for a particular uprising trend. I already am the queen of post-its, so it was time to take it to the next level:

As a very visual person, this inspiration board is a method I initiated last month to keep track of and give cisual repretsentation to styles, ideas and items I'm spotting on style blogs, twitter, on the street/in-store, and catching from conferences via livestream. It's hard to keep it all harnessed in my brain!

So here is the current state of my board, complete for July:

Some of my favourite styles and items right now include:
  • Coloured denim: I'm on a mad hunt for a pair of skinny reds!
  • Tangerine nails
  • That beachy bronze glow across the cheeks
  • Clothing and accessorizes in water colours: teal, aqua, turquoise, mint
  • Purple eye make-up
  • Ensembles that just look causal, cool and effortless
  • Long, asymmetrical feather earrings
  • White and rose-gold watches
  • I need a large military-style cross body bag
  • I'm long over-due for a pair of beige round or almond top platform pumps
  • This fall, I am determined to work a bow-tie into my look!

Now that August is finally upon us, it's time to start digging through my stack of fashion magazines for this month and switch some things around on the board! What looks and ideas inspire your style right now?'

crop top...

One trend that has come back this summer has been the 90's crop top- but with its own twist of course. Unfortunately this is a tricky look to pull off and not flattering at all. I'm not in the tip top shape I want to be (but I'm working on it!) so belly-baring tops are off the table for me. The twist to wearing a crop top this summer is to pair it with a high waisted pant in order to allow more women to pull this look off and look good doing it- the idea isn't to try and bare a lot of skin. Less is more!

Where top crops tend to be flowy, this look doesn't tend to look good with my body type, they stop right at the widest part of my body- my hips and cover up my more narrow waist. On the end, I look wider and boxy: not flattering.

But with the crop top below, I just loved the pattern and decided I'd wear it with a pair of jean shorts as a beach cover-up. Then, I got the idea of belting it with a high-waisted skirt to keep it modest but also work with my body's curves.

The Outfit
  • Crop top- American Eagle (SJ, July '11)
  • Skirt- American Apparel (Halifax, April '07)
  • Belt: Eddie Bauer (Moncton, August '06)
  • Necklace: Banana Republic (Freeport, Nov '10)
  • Hat: Gap (Moncton, July '11)
  • Scarf around hat: Coach (Toronto, Sept '08)
  • Espadrilles: Steve Madden- The Urban Shoe Myth (SJ, June '11)

Sometimes we have to remember that all trends aren't going to flatter all body types (I know I've stayed clear of a few myself)- or you can transform or modify them to make them your own! The most important thing is knowing what you feel comfortable it and knowing what looks good on you! Just like it's never truly one size fits all, it's never should be one look suits all.

update on New Brunswick Fashion Week...

As of current, New Brunswick lacks a legitimate fashion industry. Sure, our choices of boutiques and access to fashionable goods has been steadily improving but a true fashion industry much exist beyond just retail. This industry is one that starts with the fashon designers. Although we have 3 design schools in Atlantic Canada, the collective provinces lack the support system to allow these designers to thrive and make a career after their training- that is if they want to stay here. We lose our talent to the bigger cities, whether it be to the likes of Montreal, Toronto, or New York.

As of last week, the province of New Brunswick has indicated interest in changing and advancing the fashion industry here. We may have the support and programs to produce designers, but beyond the buyers, designers here have lacked afforable access to production and distribution of their products. The purpose of New Brunswick Fashion Week (NBFW) is not only to promote the growing fashion culture within our province, but also to really kick start the industry.
We'll be seeing NBFW kick off in Moncton, move onto Saint John, and wrap up in Fredericton during the week of September 30-October 8, this fall. Two big events planned for to happen in Saint John would be the equivalent of Fashion's Night Out as well as a fashion gala.
So a head's up to all the designers, models, photographers, retailers, make-up artists, and hair stylists- stay tuned to find out what's scheduled and how you can be involved- one of those ways to find out would be to attend the Industry Night next Wednesday, August 3, at Shadow Lawn.

Be sure to follow New Brunswick Fashion Week on Facebook and Twitter! Join the buzz: use the hashtag #NBFW when talking about the plans for NBFW. As well, a blogger meet-up will be scheduled to happen during NBFW and I'll be sure to share details of the plans shortly!

short, short summer...

I apologize my post have been a little infrequent and less steady than before. I find that's what can happen once summer comes along- I find my schedule becoming incredibly busy and then you feel compelled to get out and make the best of the good weather on top of that- because, let's face it, in this part of the world our summer seems to be so short that you need to soak up every. last. ray. We take our sunshine and warm weather very seriously around here!

Last week was another mix of humidity and fog when I headed uptown for Fusion's Newcomer Night at Happinez. This outfit was my answer to combining the need for for a somewhat casual outfit that also included a dress- like I said these summer dress days are limited!

The Outfit
  • Dress: Red Berries- Sweet Pea (Halifax, March '11)
  • Sweater: Toggery- Black Dog Boutique (SJ, July '11)
  • Scarf head band- Coach (Toronto, Dec '09)
  • Necklace: Dogeared- Je Suis Prest Boutique (SJ, Mar '10)
  • Belt: Eve Gravel- Black Dog Boutique (SJ, Dec '10)
  • Sandals: Sam Edelman- Piperlime (July '11)

I also apologize for the delay in getting the updated news on New Brunswick Fashion Week- promise I'll have that to you before the week's end!
