Just wanted to submit a little shout out to my hairstylist (and aunt), Heather Keenan and her business partner/friend Connie Quinn! These two women have experienced 21 successful years in business together, and earlier this month they also became receipients of a provincial Merit Award for business excellence, as presented by MLA Dorothy Shephard.

The small awards ceremony set up at Lancaster Mall on the west side of Saint John.

Merit awards were presented in categories of business, volunteering, arts, leadership and environment.

Reflections Day Spa has grown over the years from hairstyling to include tanning services and then expand to a full day spa 3 years ago upon their move to their current location at 59 Catherwood Street. Congratulations to Heather and Connie!

For a while I had debated the possibility on getting a coloured extension, just to have a little fun with my hair. So all while flipping through magazines the last couple months, I started spotting celebrities sporting feathers clipped into their hair, I was intrigued. So last month I messaged my aunt, also my hairstylist, and asked her if they were carrying any of these feather extensions. As it so happens she had been looking into carrying them along side their coloured extensions. A couple of weeks I got the call that they were in, and yesterday I was excited to finally go to Reflections Day Spa and check them out! Upon her advice, I went with three, and decided to add some colour variety...

I was quite happy with the end result!

They actually ended up being fairly subtle under my top layers after styling my hair myself this morning, so I'm going to go in next week and have them moved closer to the top layers of my hair.

The feathers are actually rooster feathers died various colours- and they can be washed, dried, straightened, or curled just like your natural hair!

one powerful hair dryer...

Saturday morning, I rolled out of bed and hurried across town for an appointment with my hair stylist at Reflections Day Spa (who also happens to be my aunt)! I'd been eagerly awaiting this appointment for a few weeks. WIth my colour faded and winter dryness in effect, my hair definitely in need of a pick-me-up!

Heather added caramel and blonde highlights to my hair with foils. As far as the cut, I went for a trim where I'm trying to grow out my hair for the wedding. Here's the "after shot" of my new 'do:

Here's an interest fact about my Saturday morning salon experience: I had my hair dried by a Ferrari engine. I kid you not! Ferrari has actually designed an engine specficially to fit in a hair dryer (the Babyliss Pro Voltare). Apparently it dries your hair in half the time. The world of hair care tools doesn't get any sportier than that!

Saturday afternoon I met up with local photographer Sean McGrath for a photo shoot in uptown Saint John! I'll tell you, it was a windy and chilly day but Sean was great to work with and it was a fun experience (despite the fact that I was dancing around outside like an idiot to stay warm!) Look for those outfit photos in upcoming blog posts!

Tomorrow I'm featuring my first video blog post (vlog)- here's to hoping I'm not totally awkward!- to review a new cosmetics purchase.

reflection's day spa customer appreciation event...

The time of year has come around where Reflection's Day Spa plans an event to shower their customers with great deals, sample services, and lots of yummy home-made food! This year the Customer Appreciation Event was particularly special because this year marks Reflection's 20th year of business- and I've been a customer since the beginning (though back in the early years I had to be propped up in the chair and my aunt always had to tell me to stop moving my eye brows when she trimmed my bangs!)

I popped in Monday evening to check it out and left with a few goodies of my own! I also took some pictures to document the event:

The first thing I aim to achieve when I put an outfit together is comfort: fabrics that have movement and flexibility; clothing that layers well. This is the 2nd wear for this flannel button during the 30 for 30. It's probably the most casual piece I added to the set and it's been worn both times on lazy days, running errands and just needing to get from point A to point B. I met my friend Steph for coffee uptown and then we browsed the shops as well as the Christmas Craft vendors in Brunswick Square. Businesses and shops have been decorated for the Holidays since the cobwebs and jack o'laterns of Halloween were put away, but this Sunday kicked off Christmas shopping and extended hours...the Holidays are really starting to set in!

This week is going to be a busy one for me! Monday evening, I attended Reflection Day Spa's Customer Appreciate Event- for which a blog post will follow this one later today. Tonight is Market Square's Viva La Diva fashion show and event, which will be followed by Je Suis Prest Boutique's sold out Holiday Fashion Party at Canterbury Lounge- both events that I've very much been looking forward to this month!

They are welcoming new staff to their day spa and with that comes special savings to their customers! Their new soon-to-be aesthetician, Lindsay Hayes, is currently finishing her education and as with any service with their students, they are offering 50% off aesthetic services with Lindsay! I have personally been going to Reflections since its early years (20 yrs ago!) when I was 6 and my aunt (one of the owners) used to tell me to stop raising my eyebrows so she could cut my bangs! They moved into a new location 1 1/2 yrs ago and they redid this building top to bottom to expand their business from salon to day spa- their hard work paid off because its a beautiful spot with a great atmosphere!
